PCJ Inplements $7m Energy Solution

February 10, 2017

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) has successfully implemented two major energy intervention projects at the Wolmer’s Girls School, at a total cost of $7 million, which are expected to generate savings of more than $2.5 million each year.

The PCJ installed a $3 million, 10kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system and carried out a $4 million LED lighting upgrade project at the Kingston-based institution between 2015 and 2016.

The solar PV system, which consists of 42 polycrystalline panels and grid-tied inverters, can reduce the school’s energy usage by 17,550 kWh per year, and could cut the institution’s annual energy costs by approximately J$474,000.

The PCJ, in a news release, said that Wolmer’s Girls is one of 15 schools across the island that have received PV systems under a J$62 million initiative, which it undertook as part of its efforts to reduce the public sector’s energy bills.
